So what about Roatan? I’ve lived here since 2007…trust me it does exist.
The first time I heard the word, I had no idea what or where it was. I just felt compelled to learn more. Once I figured out how to spell it, a Google search later and I was on my way.
Roatan is the largest of the Bay Islands off the coast of Honduras, nestled in the Caribbean Ocean. Even being the largest it is only 5 miles wide X 37 miles long. Surrounded by the world’s second longest barrier reef Australia lays claim to the first.
From the calm, protected turquoise blue water (inside the reef) a swim to shore and you are standing on sugar soft, white sand beaches, leading to lush, tropical foliage, rising to the highest peaks of a central ridge.
Roatan History has lead to diverse communities of people calling Roatan home, shaping the unique cultural mix, languages and customs. Then avid scuba-divers discovered the hidden gem, and an influx of ‘gringos’ began to arrive.
When I moved to Roatan, Honduras from Ontario, Canada, not only did I find a tropical paradise (and leave the cold weather behind) I was warmly (pun intended) welcomed to the Roatan Global Village.
There is plenty to see and do when you come to Roatan, whether it is for a week or a lifetime. I look forward to sharing what it has to offer with you in future postings.
But I must warn you: The Roatan Vortex will pull you in and you’ll never want to leave!
