Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds in Outdoor Arena in Austin

Okay, I’ll admit it, I didn’t know who Nick Cave was before I hit the SXSW Music Scene in Austin earlier this month….Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds to be precise. An Australian musician, songwriter, author, screenwriter, composer and occasional film actor, he performed to an outside audience of what felt like thousands rather than hundreds, but I was being crushed too often and too quickly to take count.

As I made my way (late) to the front where they would have shepherded press in an hour before his performance, the bass was too deep and off balance so it was hard to get a sense of his essence and true sound because of it.

Prior to his existing gig, he was in The Birthday Party in the early 1980s, a band renowned for its gothic lyrics and violent sound influenced by free jazz, blues and post-punk. I’d suggest that his current sound is also violent and punky as well and if you want to throw in a little gothic in there, I’d say he still fits the part in his 2013 persona.
